Disgracing the League: The Donald Sterling Debacle

“There’s no place for Donald Sterling in our league,” tweeted NBA superstar LeBron James. He was not alone in this belief as players current and former, owners, and TV personalities all voiced similar opinions. Their voice was heard as NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, struck with authority, banning Sterling for life from the NBA, and encouraging owners around the league to force Sterling into selling his team. I thoroughly believe this was the right decision for the NBA to make.

All of this, of course, is stemming from Sterling’s racist comments, that were directed towards his African-American girlfriend, the comments were recorded and published by TMZ. To make the situation worse DuJour released a shocking statement made by Sterling himself.

“I wish I had just paid her off,” this coming from the longest tenured owner in the NBA who bought the team in 1981.

Donald Sterling is currently still the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, a team whose two best players are both African-American. The Clippers team boycotted Sterling during pre-game warm ups before their game against the Golden State Warriors by turning their shooting shirts inside out, hiding the Clippers logo. The Clippers were not alone in this, as the ever-popular Miami Heat also partook in this boycott by doing the same during their warm-ups.

The league as a whole has stood by the Clippers voicing their support in many ways. The NBA is selling black shirts with the words “WE ARE ONE” printed in white letters on the front. In addition, many teams have made their logos black and white on social media in support of the Clippers organization and to stand united against racism. I am glade to see the support the rest of the NBA has showed for an organization that has gone through so much in the past month.

Sterling has made few comments on this situation but upon hearing that he will more than likely be forced to sell his team, he said he intends to sue. Sterling intends to force the NBA into a long drawn-out lawsuit. This being said, the NBA is in good hands with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who has a law degree.

I don’t believe that there is room for views like this in society today let alone in the NBA. Especially in the case of where these views are being expressed by someone with so much social prowess. I hope Donald Sterling realizes the error of his ways and steps down, but as is the norm with the rich and famous, I seriously doubt he goes down without a fight.
