‘Tis the Season

Tis+the+Season

Winter has finally arrived in Aspen/Snowmass, and ski season is underway. Snowmass Mountain opened on Nov. 24 bringing joy to many eager skiers. Aspen Mountain later opened on Nov. 27. Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk are both expected to open on Dec. 10.

Snow did come later than expected this year and many were worried that the mountains would have a delayed open. Through most of early to mid November, the mountains were dry, and grass started to turn green in some parts of Aspen. Fortunately, late storms arrived just in time to allow for the mountains to open.

Opening day conditions were sub-par but very exceptional for the amount of snow that accumulated throughout early and mid November. Aspen Mountain only had three out of 76 runs open, and Snowmass only had three out of 114 runs open. Even though the mountains lack a sturdy base and have very little to offer right now, the future of white mountains and powder days looks promising.

Fortunately, projected snowfall is expected to be average to above average for the 2016-17 season. With El Niño transitioning into La Niña, jet streams change and put Aspen/Snowmass in a good position to receive great amounts of snowfall. Various forecasting websites and services such as AccuWeather.com, National Weather Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have posted their predictions for the year. The majority of these organizations are optimistic about snow

With more trails and lifts beginning to open and heavy snow in the forecast, this winter has high expectations and optimistic outlooks.
