Quite the Production

“We’re gonna be the producers of a great big Broadway flop!” If that doesn’t seem too contradictory for a story about success, then I don’t know what does. Surprisingly, however, the contradiction is what makes the show that much more enjoyable.

Aspen Community Theater brought Mel Brooks’ Broadway hit “The Producers” to our very own stage this fall, staring Corey Simpson as Leo Bloom, and Bob Moore as Max Bialystock.

The story line follows a washed-up Broadway producer who can’t seem to get his old charm back and a mousy, timid accountant. The two pair up and go against the norm and attempt to find the worst play ever written, hire the worst director and actors in attempt to create the worst flop of a show in history. Providing they pull it off the correctly, their flop would raise more money than a success, which is the ultimate goal.  When things go awry the producers find themselves in a difficult position.

With a cast full of Aspenites including, AHS senior Joeli Villa and Spanish teacher Paul Reynolds along with actors visiting from outside the valley, The Producers cast had been rehearsing since the end of August. Hard at work, they were able to pull it off with help of their very own producers Jody Hecht and Rita Hunter.

Not only was it well-rehearsed and easy to follow, but it was fall-off-your-seat hilarious. Every actor was astonishingly outgoing, and even when pushed out of his or her comfort zone, they were able to create a wonderful production with a plethora of laughs for all ages.

The unpredictable plot includes everything from happy-tippy-tappy dancing toes to Hitler and his ever-faithful Nazis to a household full of gay theater fanatics. Seems like an impossible mix, no? Well, believe it or not, they all tie in together in “The Producers”, and what a wonderful combination it was.
