Girls’ Lax Stepping Up Its Game to Win Championships

The girls’ lacrosse team kicked off its season on March 5 at the Mountain League scrimmages in Grand Junction. The girls won two out of three of their games. The team, although they didn’t play their best, was able to recognize what they needed to do to contribute to their success in the future.

The girls explained that their two main problems were a lack of communication and the need to work on stick skills—connecting passes, cutting to be open, and ground balls.

Senior and defender Katie Peshek believes that once the team gets to know each other better, the communication will come more easily.

“I hope we will become closer as a team and put more effort in, so we can be the best team we can be,” Peshek said. “I feel like if we all come together a little bit more, we will be awesome this season!”

As for the stick skills, all the team can do is continue to practice.

“These (communication and stick skills) are two key components needed to win games,” sophomore and defender Sydney Forster said.

The team players believe that their scrimmages were incredibly helpful, as they gave players a wake up call as to how competitive the games this season will be and gave the coaches insight into their players’ abilities in game situations.

“The scrimmage allowed the coaches to see how each player plays under pressure and what position they will best succeed in,” said freshman low attack player Sabrina Turbidy.

The team plans to intensify their practices by creating more of a competitive atmosphere.

“If we want to win the League Championships, we are going to need to step up our game,” said Forster.

Overall, the scrimmages helped snap the season into gear and pump up the girls for their upcoming season.

The team hopes to bring home the banner this year, and they are ready to get serious and win their games to do so. The lacrosse team has only won one league banner, and that was two years ago in the 2014 season.

But the girls are hopeful that this will be the year to bring home the banner, as they believe they currently have a very strong team. The team did not lose any superstars, and the new freshmen players have a lot of talent to bring to the field. And with varsity stars, Brooke Pisani (center) and Hannah Clauss (goalie), the team is sure to pull out some wins this season.

“I definitely think the scrimmages were a good marker for the start of the season because it really gave us a chance to play in a competitive situation against teams that we will be playing later this year,” Forster said.

The girls’ lacrosse team will have its first real test when it plays its first league game on Saturday, March 12 in Durango.
