Last week, the first snow fell in Aspen, covering it in a fluffy wet substance. It snowed about three inches on Thursday Oct. 6, making us either shiver in our boots, or catch the snowflakes with our tongues. Unfortunately (or fortunately) that was the last snow that we will see until the last weeks of October, according to forecasts.

Following the normal routine of snow before Halloween, predicted snow will fall on the 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th according to accuweather. This winter is supposed to be colder and longer than last year; winter is predicted to last until the middle to late spring of 2017.

The Northern Plains and Midwest are supposed to be enveloped by a bitter cold wind, and the region is predicted to develop snowpack in early December, which will most likely contribute to colder weather.

Temperatures are supposed to plummet about six to nine degrees lower than last season.

“There are going to be some nights, especially if there’s snow cover in the heart of winter, that could get down to 20 or 30 below,” AccuWeather Long-Range Forecaster Paul Pastelok said in an online report.

Snow will fall the hardest in late November, mid-to-late December and mid February, with an ice shower on Nov. 29th.

However, in the South, temperatures are predicted to be warmer than normal because of El Niño.

So prepare yourselves for an extremely cold winter: bulk up on down jackets, buy a lot of sweat pants, and make sure you have a big mug of hot cocoa waiting for you when you get home because sure enough, winter is coming.
