ASPEN — Not all AHS students choose to seek the IB Diploma Program, but those who do know it will challenge them to balance school, sports, and a social life. Seniors are especially busy with college applications due and graduation just steps away.

Kennidy Quist, an accomplished competitive swimmer recently accepted into Harvard University, is no exception.  She has lived through the IB Diploma Program while balancing her homework-packed schedule, her demanding sports life, and squeezing time in with her friends.

“The IB Diploma Program has greatly impacted my social life and athletic career,” Quist said. “I have always prioritized my academics, and because of this, I have been forced to make trade offs. The skills that have helped me most to balance academics and athletics are those of time management and organization. Another helpful component has been the willingness of teachers and coaches to work with me to accomodate my busy schedule.”

Quist was recruited by Harvard for swimming and applied through early action. She is incredibly excited to be accepted into one of the world’s top universities and compete as a division one athlete.

“My acceptance to Harvard has in no way impacted the time and effort I put forth in my classes and in my swimming. While stress has been relieved I still aspire to do well in all of my activities,” Quist said.

Quist explains that in the IB Diploma Program she has been fortunate to have teachers who are truly passionate about their subject material and teaching students. She feels she has learned an innumerable amount of valuable skills that will help her to succeed in college and beyond.

“To any kids looking to enter the IB program, I advise to only take the courses you are most interested in,” Quist said. “While IB Diploma provides students with a well-rounded approach to academics I have found that I learn most in those classes in which I am most interested in and engaged in.”
