AHS Cult

Some are afraid of ghosts or goblins, but others? That’d be the 2016 presidential election, at least in the eyes of American Horror Story (AHS) creators, Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk.

Each fall, AHS takes a different approach from the last to give audiences a much-desired scare, dragging an intricate horror movie out into a television series. They’ve gone through the not-so-basic murder house, insane asylum, coven, freak show, haunted hotel, and reality television twist, but never have taken an approach such as this season. It seems that with each season, the creators attempt to make the show more unique. This season is especially so as an election wouldn’t seem like the typical horror.

At least, Cult being unique was the hope for the season.. However, two episodes in, I fear this isn’t the case and the season won’t live up to expectations.

From what American Horror Story has shown in the past four episodes, this season seems all too typical. This may be because of the lack of realism, or because I was able to predict what would happen right off the bat.

I personally hate when a show portrays a character as insane to all the other characters but there’s an effect of dramatic irony when the audience knows they’re not as crazy as the appear. When AHS picked the beloved Sarah Paulson to be this character, I wasn’t too happy.

So far, the show lacks originality besides the twist of the election. There are still details in the show that are still not clear to the viewers. This leaves room for hope that the show will use their ever so popular twist in the season. As of now, a plot twist is the only thing that could save this season from being unoriginal– a criticism the creators have been able to avoid for years now.

So far, AHS Cult has neglected to keep me on the edge of my seat but rather calling the shots on what will happen in the next scene and growing tired of the same old clown dance the characters have been going through. A change in scenery is needed.

While thus far this season is unimpressive, I still have faith in the creators and Emma Roberts who will soon be joining the season. Hopefully soon there will be no need to sit back, scoffing, but instead leaning forward intently, a position American Horror Story never is short to put me in until now.
