Experiences in Gay Ski Week

Last week, rainbows and love showered the streets of Aspen during the 41st anniversary of Gay Ski Week, which takes place every January. In the philanthropic spirit of the Aspen community, the organization raises money to support local charities, and of course, celebrate gay pride. Various events, parties, and activities both on-and-off the mountain take place throughout the fun-filled week.

Visitors reported on some of their favorite highlights and why they chose to attend.

Corey Norris, a Gay Ski Week tourist from Los Angeles, thought the best event this year was at Cloud Nine. He believed it was essential for the LGBTQ + community to join in support of Gay Ski Week.

“It’s a great community, a lot of friends come out from all over the country, and it’s a great way to hang out and catch up with people you don’t see all the time and be athletic at the same time,” Norris said.

Jon, another Gay Ski Week visitor from Denver, went by the name Bernadette for the day. This was Bernadette’s fourth time making it out for Gay Ski Week.

“I usually participate in this (downhill competition), so I’m helping carry the flag down this year, which I’ve done every year, and I think that’s my favorite part,” Jon said.

Jon advocated for bringing the LGBTQ + community to Aspen.

“I think it’s nice to bring what we normally see in the big cities to Aspen, and it’s always fun to meet other people who like to ski who are also gay, and you know, break some stereotypes maybe,” Jon said.

Amelia Estrella, the manager at Chase Bank in Aspen, was present at all of the events.

“Drag Queen bingo was awesome, but downhill the whole team was a part of,” Estrella said.

Estrella felt more people came out this year for Gay Ski Week than in the past. She also saw the importance of having women represented.

“I do feel that there is more of a presence in the area. I am glad to see a lot of women, a lot of powerful women in the area,” Estrella said.
