This morning, Aspen Middle School students and staff were directed to the big gym in the high school after a Raptor Alert and email explaining the sighting of a bear cub inside the building.
“The email from Amy [AMS Principal] had a clip attached from their cameras and it said on the bottom, 15 hours ago. So that bear was there at least overnight.” Abigail St John, an AMS staff member said.
ASD families received a text around 8 this morning reading, “Dear Families, there’s a bear cub in the cafeteria, and we are searching for its mother.” Security footage shows knocked-down trash cans and a cub following its mother into a classroom at around 2 am.
As of 9 am, AMS students are having an all-school dance party in the big gym while waiting for the bears to be evacuated from the building.
“I’m surprised actually that it hasn’t happened before because it seems like it should happen more than it does. Honestly, I hope they don’t harm them because after 3 tags, they’re out,” Greta Campaign, a 7th-grade AMS student, said.
As of 9:36, students have returned to the middle school.
According to an email shortly after, “The cub was sedated and removed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
Students and staff are back in their classrooms and have returned to their normal schedule.”
