Trey Robinson Putts AHS into States
While most students scattered across the country during Ex Ed the AHS men’s golf team went to Durango for regionals. Senior Trey Robinson shot a 73 to carry AHS to victory.
“I was just trying to have fun. Knowing that it could be my last high school golf tournament, I just wanted to enjoy it. I played relaxed, and tried to leave it all out there,” Robinson said.
That was Robinson’s best round of golf while at AHS. He made a 12-foot putt on the 18th hole to seal the victory. It originally seemed as though Robinson and Cooper Gould, from Vail Christian, would go to a playoff to make the final decision, however, Gould bogeyed on the 18th hole as Robinson saved par. Gould shot a 74, giving Robinson and AHS a one-stroke victory.
Robinson described his memorable week in Durango as follows:
“Off the tee I hit the ball very mediocre, but from within 100 yards I played really well. The strongest part of my game was illustrated on the putting green, as I putted lights out,” Robinson said.
With the victory at Hillcrest Golf Club, Durango’s local golf course, the boy’s team qualified for the 3A State Championship at Pueblo City Park. AHS traveled to Sterling for their practice round on Sunday, Sept. 28; the two-day tournament started on Sept. 29. Robinson entered the State Championship ranked as the 2nd 3A individual. He was accompanied by fellow AHS teammates Will Hazen, Burke Daily and Davis Henschel. Robinson’s game plan for the upcoming tournament was to have a similar mindset and enjoy every last minute of his high school golf career.
“I’ll be putting a lot of emphasis on my short game, and on short shots. Ultimately though my main goal will be to just have fun, and enjoy my last week of practice with the guys,” Robinson said.
The AHS men’s golf team ultimately finished their season 6th overall in their state tournament after traveling six hours to Sterling. Robinson shot a 77 and a78 at the State Championship. He finished tied for seventeenth.
Junior Will Hazen put on a strong showing in Sterling. On the first day of the tournament, Hazen shot a 79, and was disappointed about his performance. A triple bogey on the 18th hole set him back and hurt his score on day one. However, he rebounded quite nicely and shot an impressive 71, leading all golfers, on the second day of the tournament. Shooting 1-under on the second day pushed Hazen into a tie for 5th place indivdually.
“After having a rough first day, I was pretty proud of my comeback considering that I underperformed in the first round,” junior Will Hazen said.
The AHS men’s golf team put together a great season this fall. Robinson and Hazen were both very proud of the team and the season as a whole. Next year should also be promising considering that Robinson was the only senior on top five travel squad this season.
