iOS8 Update Explanation
On September 17, Apple released its new mobile device operating software. Among the new features are updates for the camera, new passbook features, a health app, texting and text-base “action” features, and a new tips app that allows users to interact with their phones in a friendly and informative manner.
The camera now has an updated time-lapse mode that automatically adjusts to lighting and the environment. It has a determined rate at which it takes frames and processes these frames. Alongside the time-lapse are more updated features like slow-motion filming, square shots, and panoramic shots.
“The new things that it does with camera are cool because you can change the color and saturation; and, you can change the lighting prior to the picture to see what it looks like,” junior Nick Hanle said. “I like taking nature and action shots.” In general, there is a setting that allows photographers to adjust the light exposure, similar to changing an f-stop to move the aperture in a camera.
iOS8 also brings an updated passbook app that is useful for saving reward cards, movie tickets, event tickets, and any media that have a bar code and a correlating app that is able to process the bar code. For instance, because iTunes is an app that sponsors iTunes gift cards, passbook allows you to upload your gift card to Passbook’s “wallet” and then add money to it through an Apple store. Another example is uploading a Fandango bought movie ticket to passbook as long as Fandango is an app in the phone; then, the passbook bar code is ready to scan at your local movie theatre that accepts Fandango tickets. Basically, it brings all your important purchased items and reward cards to your phone.
Next up is the new health app that helps users track their sleep, nutrition, and exercise.
According to Apple’s website, the health app was created to help users get a concise and honest approach to their current health and well-being.
“And we’ve created a new tool for developers called HealthKit, which allows all the incredible health and fitness apps to work together, and work harder, for you,” Apple states on their website.
The health app is so in-depth that it includes individual vitamins and mineral tabs, even furthering the health tracking process. All a user has to do is enter in their daily intake and the Health app creates a graph visualization of all the nutritional factors that have been entered in to the App.
Another new feature is the text-action. It is a simple program that allows users to respond to new text-based messages like iMessage and text by swiping right to left across the message, which then prompts a keyboard to appear on the screen. There are new suggested word options that allow users to further their sentences with inferred words that follow the general idea of their text. For example, after typing “what” as the beginning of the sentence, it suggest the words “what,” “is,” and “a.” This is all included in another new app known as the Tips app.
The Tips app lets users know about cool and innovative new features that can expand their networking and general phone experience and ability. It is automatically installed by Apple and is a permanent application.
The new software has reached 8.0.2 and continues to progress and build new features as well as fix problematic errors and small mistakes.
