Powder Junkie Playlist

I am currently a junior at Aspen High and the host of The Will Kahn Show on Aspen Public Radio. At 10 pm every Friday night on APR (that’s 91.5 on your radio dial) I put together an hour-long radio show that consists of an eclectic mix of music that I curate the week before. The songs I play range in genre from Hip Hop and Electronic to Indie Rock, and I provide commentary for each tune. For more information about my show, please visit the Aspen Public Radio website aspenpublicradio.org.
My Playlist of the Week…
Winter Break is upon us and more importantly, there’s finally an adequate amount of snow to have a spectacular ski outing. It’s a universally recognized fact that every powder junkie needs a vibe-y playlist to shred to, so in honor of winter, this week’s playlist features a mix of tracks that will help propel you down the mountain and just generally enhance this holiday season.
“Coming Up For Air”- Philip Selway: Radiohead can attribute much of their greatness to their innovative percussionist and back up vocalist Philip Selway. His second LP, “Weatherhouse”, boasts some of his best solo works to date. He meticulously saturates his signature brand of sleek atmospheric production into each track on the record. “Coming Up For Air” is one of the most artistically progressive and experimental tracks of 2014. It is Selway’s most commendable effort to date. Give it a listen.
“Sober To Death”- Car Seat Headrest: bandcamp.com is an incredibly effective marketing tool for indie artists to showcase their material on a social network of alternative music aficionados. Car Seat Headrests’ prolific bandcamp discography is one of the most absorbing DIY lo- fi garage rock collections on the Internet. “Sober To Death” is an emotionally charged piece of art. This song features catchy hooks and a dynamic energy that is almost reminiscent of the lo fi pioneers, Pavement.
“Roscoe”- Midlake: Midlake’s sprited, yet doleful sound and energy falls somewhere in between the Killers, The Strokes, and Sparklehorse. “Roscoe” is a stylistically minimalist production that is a testament to the band’s astute pop sensibilities. This impeccable composition is a wonderfully accessible listen that captures the best of indie-pop and mainstream alternative rock music.
“Two Weeks”- FKA Twigs: We live in an exceptionally forward thinking society, yet FKA Twigs’ sound is still decades ahead of its time. She is essentially a singer songwriter with an ear for experimental electronic beats and synth; one thing is for sure, “Two Weeks” is anything but a generic production. I’m excited to see where this young artist takes her unparalleled vision and technique in the future.
