For many students, X Games is a weekend filled with concerts, friends, and watching events from either the base of Buttermilk, or maybe from the comfort of their home on their couch with a bowl of popcorn, but for a few AHS students, X Games 2015 went work. A few students, including AHS seniors Luis Martinez, Camille Lasalette, and Graciela Robertson, interned with ESPN over the weekend, and it was quite the experience.

The interns’ job was mainly to write down descriptions of and taking notes on different athletes during their events. ESPN photographers would take pictures of the athletes, but the intern’s descriptions were used to match the photograph to a name, so that there would not be any labeling confusion.

The internship gave students opportunities to see X Games in a different way, and presented the students with new privileges, such as VIP passes in exchange for their work over the course of the weekend.

“The internship lasted Thursday through Sunday of the X-Games. It was a great experience. I’ve never really paid much attention to the X-Games, but since I was working there, I had to pay attention and it was so much fun. I got to meet some of the athletes and got some VIP access to some venues,” Martinez said.

Although it was a sizeable time commitment, students said that the internship definitely didn’t consume their fun for the weekend.

“Fortunately all the events weren’t scheduled during the concert times therefore I was still able to go to all the concerts, and [our bosses] were very understanding with what needed to be done,” Robertson said.

All the students who participated this year seemed to enjoy the experience thoroughly and would love to do it again in future years if they are presented with the opportunity.

“I think I would most definitely do [an internship] again,” Robertson said. “Although I’m leaving I’d love to come back and help out. I think the most inspiring thing for me was the fact that so many important talented people start out just as interns,” Robertson said.

Martinez agreed saying, “If I could I would do it all over again.”
