New York Fashion Week 2015
It is the time of year where street style valued, patterns are iconic, and fashion figures and celebrities make their appearances. The annual New York Fashion Week (NYFW), Sponsored by Mercedes Benz, has taken place from February 12, 2015 to February 19, 2015 in the fashion capital of the East, New York City.
NYFW is an event dedicated to the fashion industry as it gives prominent and esteemed designers the opportunity to showcase their latest collections through runway shows. These shows also give buyers, as well as the media, a chance to look at upcoming trends. The collections feature clothing for the fall of 2015 and the winter of 2016.
Everyone who is anyone in the fashion world can be seen in the front row of each show taking notes and photos. These people are fashion editors, bloggers, retail store buyers, industry influencers, friends of designers, and celebrities.
Among these prominent fashion figures are editor-in-chief of Vogue Anna Wintour, Harper’s Bazaar editor Glenda Bailey, American socialite Olivia Palermo, Theory CEO and Fashion Investor Andrew Rosen, and fashion stylist Rachel Zoe.
Each designer only has 10-20 minutes per show to wow spectators, critics, and buyers. Each show features certain patterns that highlight the designer’s collection. These looks range from chilling, like Alexander Wang, to sophisticated like Michael Kors. Some of the designers featured include, Alexander Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Carolina Herrera, Donna Karan, Victoria Bekham, Diane von Furstenberg, Lacoste, Hervé léger, Kanye West x Adidas, Tory Burch, J.Crew, and Michael Kors.
You might also catch your eye on some familiar faces on the runway. Up-and-coming supermodel Kendall Jenner was strutting the runway for Diane von Furstenberg—who she opened for, Alexander Wang, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, and Donna Karan. Victoria’s Secret model, Karlie Kloss walked for Calvin Klein as well as Carolina Herrara—who she opened and closed for, and frequent Aspen visitor Gigi Hadid modeled Calvin Klein, Anna Sui and walked down the runway for Tommy Hilfiger.
Our very own, AHS senior, Sophia Giordano was lucky enough to take her first ever trip to NYC to attend the fashion shows. By the end of the week, her appreciation for the industry grew even more.
“Being at fashion week was an incredible experience. It was thrilling to see the diversity of creative minds within the fashion world. Every show was very unique, from the music that was played as the models strutted down the runway, to the hair styles, the audience, and of course the clothing that was being shown. It was eye opening to see how much work goes into such short productions,”
With her love for fashion and her dream to be a part of the industry, she got to help out with one of the shows.
“At the Dennis Basso show, I helped make sure every model had their hair, makeup, nails, and toes looking perfect. I helped dress the models during their quick seconds of changing outfits. Basso has some of the most stunning collection of furs and dresses. When the show was over, Mr. Basso was very pleased and said it was one of the ‘best shows ever,’ ” Giordano said.
The 2015 Fashion Week has marked yet another successful event in the fashion industry. Each collection presented by the designers was like a piece of artwork. The anticipation for designers to release their collections in stores leaves consumers and shopaholics eager for the fall time. Check out recaps of each show online.
