Aspen Boys Lacrosse Dodge their Way into Playoffs
The Aspen Boys Lacrosse Team (11-2), the pride of Aspen High, will face off against Battle Mountain (10-3), on home turf Friday for the Mountain League championship. Aspen is coming off a 12-5 victory against mountain rivals Summit and are hoping that their recent win will give them confidence coming into the biggest game of their season, so far.
“We’ve had a great run in,” said Henry Godfrey, a junior on the lacrosse team. “We have been playing really well lately and we have been playing great, solid, team lacrosse. Hopefully, we will be able to beat Battle Mountain for the league title.”
If Aspen defeats Battle Mountain, then not only will another Aspen team triumph over another Vail team, but they will also have earned the privilege of hosting every state playoff game on the way to the finals, besides the championship game itself. However, the game will not be easy; it will be a hard-fought thriller as we saw in the last game between the two sides, which ended 5-3 in Aspen’s favor.
“Battle Mountain is a seasoned team with a lot of seniors,” said senior Trey Robinson. “They have a lot of good players but we have better individuals and better, all-around team play.”
Robinson, who is an integral part of Aspen’s strong midfield lineup, is one of the eleven seniors who currently plays for the Aspen team.
“We have a lot of seniors and a lot of experience on this team,” said senior Tyler Tick, who leads the team with 52 goals on the season. “Hopefully our experience and our superb team play will help us get past Battle Mountain.”
Aspen players are hoping for a huge crowd that will encourage and invigorate them against a tough Battle Mountain side.
“Having a big crowd would be fantastic,” said Robinson. “With a bigger crowd we get more pumped up and are better able to play as a team.”
