A Fresh Perspective
Don’t walk through the door near the parking lot.
Don’t walk up the Red Staircase.
Don’t cross the yellow brick road.
Don’t touch the boat.
As a freshman you hear all the rumors and rules about what to do and what not to do in high school. They normally start early. I remember already being nervous and excited for high school in 5th grade. While this may seem ridiculous, it’s the reality for most. This summer I heard a lot of questions asking whether or not I was nervous for high school. Every time I responded with “yes,” Most people informed me I would be fine. I usually didn’t believe this. Why would people even ask this if I would be fine? I thought to myself.
After walking through the double doors my fears vanished. I was still nervous about everything throughout my first week, but I started to realize that there wasn’t much to be scared about. While it hasn’t been as scary as I first anticipated, it has been stressful and confusing. On the first day I got lost twice and my friends got lost even more times than that. I had started to hope that we wouldn’t get homework until after Ex Ed, but sadly that was not the case.
There are also many good aspects to high school like your freedom, meeting a larger group of people, and having way fewer rules. One of my favorite parts was getting my phone, and I found that most people felt the same. Many people have also found large differences between the high school and the middle school
“There is so much more freedom compared to the middle school,” said freshman Karen Galvan.
Another freshman expressed their thoughts about the changes, “I really like the high school my favorite part is getting to use my phone throughout the day.”
I asked another freshman, Hannah Zanin, about what she thought would happen during her first week, “I thought I was going to come in and get lost or have someone be mean,” Zanin said “but it wasn’t that bad. No one was mean.”
As I finished my first week, I had decided that not only was I really looking forward to high school, but many others shared my feelings.
