School Spirit: A Bust
It’s no big secret that AHS is a small school, however, there is no excuse that 580 kids can’t have outstanding school spirit. I am quite a hypocrite when it comes to spirit, but I want to work on my support for our sports teams, clubs, and various events, and everyone else should as well.
We have several sports teams including basketball, football, golf, volleyball, cross country, lacrosse, and hockey, but it seems that everyone only concentrates on football. The players of the teams want our support and alway attempt to gather everyone to become a rowdy crowd by making announcements and posting on Facebook, but nothing seems to work.
“Wow guys! That was such a turn out! Thank you guys for all coming! It’s always so nice to have roaring crowd cheering for us. SIKE,” AHS senior Kaya Storm posted on the AHS Facebook page after encouraging everyone to come and only a few people made an appearance.
It’s not just the support for our teams and clubs that lack energy, even our pep rallies are a bust. People either don’t show up, or make apathetic appearances that feel just as boring. Of course, there are the fabulous students who attend every event with overzealous spirit and everyone loves them for that. Don’t we all want to be like those generous few?
We even had a whole week dedicated to our spirit leading up to homecoming. This is one area that we excell in. We were very active with our school spirit by dressing up in mind-blowing costumes and actually having fun with it. If we have that much fun dressing up just to go to school, imagine how fun it would be attentive to all of our other spirit events that we hold. We also have another chance to increase our school spirit with our winter spirit week.
Even though adults can’t dress up for spirit week, that doesn’t mean they can’t become involved in our school spirit. By making donations, attending various fundraisers, helping chaperone and decorate for dances, games, and others, the community members can make just as big of a difference in our school spirit.
We can all work on our support for the school in one way or another. It doesn’t have to lame, it’s supposed to be enjoyable and exciting. Try to go to a game this week and cheer on our players, make an appearance at a pep rally, and dress up for winter spirit week. Let’s work together to make our school as rowdy as possible.
