Opening game was high scoring, but not record

AHS Skier goes in for a touchdown early in Friday’s game.

When the AHS Skiers beat Middle Park on Aug. 25 by a score of 80-50, big numbers were put on the scoreboard, but the total points were far from the most ever scored in a Colorado high school football game.

According to Ryan Casey, digital media director for the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA),  “The highest scoring game in our history was 182 points by Hugo and Vona in 1930.”

He said that the Aspen/Middle Park game ranked “just outside the top 13, with the last entry being 135.”

AHS head coach Karson Pike said to the best of his knowledge, that this effort ranked among the best-ever for the home team.

“In 1905 or thereabouts, there was 105 points scored by our team,’’said Pike.

Pike also said that the AHS Skiers game ranked in the CHSAA record books for “seven different statistics.” Senior quarterback R.J. Peshek had eight touchdowns in the game, which Pike said is “not common for any position to have that many touchdowns in one game.  The quarterback in our offense has the best chance to achieve something like that, but again a high scoring game like that is not the norm.”

CHSAA spokesman Casey said other recent high scoring football games included Palmer Ridge, which beat Air Academy 88-54 in 2014, and earlier that season, Cotopaxi beat Antonito 83-56.

High school football uses what is known as a “mercy rule,” where they start running the clock no matter what, with a team up by 40 points or more, Casey said. On Sept. 1, the AHS Skiers continued their high-scoring ways, and routed Arvada 44-0.
