Aspen High School’s 2017-18 golf team seeks to grab a State Championship as they enter prestigious tournament Aug 29-30. AHS golf team has some of the most skilled golfers Aspen has to offer. The six person team has seen many courses over the past few years, but could never sweep the win going into later rounds.

“We’re looking to take home the win this year. We have probably one of the best teams in AHS history this season. A state championship banner is the only goal,” Newly named team captain Dominic Lanese said.

The loss of the golf team’s two varsity golfers Jack Pevny, and Jack Hughes could affect the performance and skill level of the team, but it doesn’t worry the squad’s all conference golfer Dawson Holmes.

“It would have been really helpful to have them because of their consistency, but everyone can still shoot in the seventies.” Holmes said.

So far so good as the lineup committed seven golfers to finish top ten in the Skiers Invitational, held at the Aspen Club last week.

“We almost took the W last week over in saddle rock. Hopefully, we can play like that again,” Lanese said.

Holmes carried the team last Tuesday, shooting a flawless 68 on the full eighteen of Aspen’s course. Holmes also competes in a variety of nationwide tournaments, putting Aspen on the map from a golf perspective. Lanese and Holmes have had golf around for quite some time now. Their experience with the game really serves as an advantage competing against other schools.

“Golf has been a passion of mine since I played it for the first time in 2011,” Lanese said.

The boys are hungry and anxious to bring pride to our AHS faculty, student body, and the school itself.
