AHS student swallows a fellow students Airpod
On December 13th, 2019, James Kelley, an AHS junior, was spotted peacefully eating his lunch with his Airpods in when senior student, Joshua George, surprised Kelley and swallowed his Airpod with a gulp of water.
George did not intend to target James Kelley\; he just happened to notice Kelley wearing an Airpod that day.
“It was something that me and a few friends had been talking about for a long time, so it was a project in the works, and we saw our golden opportunity, and you can’t let opportunities like that just pass you by in life, so we decided that we needed to act on it and it was a completely successful operation,” George said.
George had not considered the health effects that swallowing an Airpod could have on his body. According to an article by Morgan Forde from Mic, when Airpods become overheated, they can melt.
“In the event than the device’s battery became exposed in a person’s digestive system, Dr. Chen Chieh-fan told The Daily Mail that it could cause a severe intestinal rupture,” Forde stated in the article.
George spoke to a nutritionist at Aspen Valley Hospital, who advised him to watch his bowel movements. He was lucky and did not face any health consequences.
“The Airpod has exited my GI Tract,” George said.
On the other end of the spectrum, the victim, Kelley, was disappointed with the lack of discipline for George’s actions. George replaced the swallowed Airpod with a spare one he already owned.
“I was pretty pissed, but I thought he would get in trouble, but he didn’t. That pissed me off too. I feel fine now. I’m very over it,” Kelley said.
Teachers and students in the commons that day couldn’t believe he had swallowed the Airpod. Before this incident, Kelley was not friends with George. Now they will continue as acquaintances.
“After it happened everyone kept asking me if he actually did it. Then all the teachers found out since a few of them were in the commons and saw. They kept asking me why he did it and I had no idea,” Kelley said.
