There’s An App for That!
Many people have trouble deciding how long they need to dunk their cookie in milk to make it the perfect quality for their unique taste buds. Oh wait! Obviously there’s an app for that! And it just so happens that this app was created by Aspen High School sophomore Hunter Bryant, who came up with the idea for “Dunk Timer” during a cross country run.
“We were talking and came up with the idea as a joke: An app that lets you perfectly time your Oreo dunking. One of my coaches thought I wouldn’t make it, so I guess I just wanted to prove him wrong,” Bryant said.
And so he did. Bryant started working on the app at the beginning of last year. And although most of us know how incredibly smart Bryant already is, he was not an expert on app making, so he studied up and figured out a way to make his idea a reality.
“I made it with a variety of software from Apple for programming. I joined the Apple Developer’s Program, which allowed me to develop apps and submit them to the app store. With a software called ‘XCode’ I designed and programmed Dunk Timer,” Bryant said.
The whole process took around two months. Once Bryant was finished with the app, all he had left to do was submit it to the App Store, which was approved a couple weeks after.
“Dunk Timer is made to time dipping Oreos (or any other cookie) in milk. Once you find the right time, you’ll never have too soggy or too dry Oreos again,” Bryant said.
Bryant now had an app on the App Store, and something to rub in the face of his coach who didn’t think he could do it. But after a couple of months in the App Store, Bryant received an email from the manufacturers of Oreo.
“Funny story. About two months after the app was released, I got an email from Nabisco (manufacturer of Oreos) stating that I violated their copyrights. I used a picture that included an Oreo in the loading screen. They didn’t necessarily want a lawsuit, but I did need to change the app,”
Before Bryant had to tweak his app a bit, he was making some money through advertisements, but once he made the changes to the app he could no longer have the advertisements on it.
“I never thought that someone our age could create an app, but learning about Hunter’s experience, I am inspired,” sophomore Julia Foran said.
Although it is a bit hard to find the app in the App Store, if you look hard enough you’ll find it, and in no time will be enjoying your perfectly dunked cookies.
“I think I will keep developing apps, but the next one I’ll make will be a serious app, not just an app for fun,” Bryant said.
