Ex Ed Falls Back
Next school year, Ex Ed is changing from the spring to the second week in September, by popular vote from the faculty and parent input.
While the school is planning to change Ex Ed, many concerns have taken place. Many of the river courses may need to change because the water levels are so low at that time of year. Also, all the snow-based courses, such as The Tetons and The Al Johnson Challenge will need to be taken away.
“The Tetons trip was one of the best trips I have ever been on in my life. It being in the snow made the trip very unique,” sophomore Mackenzie Conner said.
This switch also means that the faculty will have to come up with new courses. The teachers who’s Ex Ed’s take place in the snow or other areas that will not be safe during the fall, will need to come up with new trips for the students.
“The teachers being the creative group that they are will be able to come up with new ideas,” AHS teacher Andy Popinchalk said.
Another disadvantage is that a lot of the planning for teachers will have to take place over the summer. Although this takes up teachers’ time in the summer, it may allow for better communication with other trip volunteers.
The final concern about moving Ex Ed to the fall is that the eighth graders may not be ready for the trip. Being able to communicate with them to make sure they get deadlines and know their contribution to the trip is going to be a challenging task.
Although there are disadvantages, there are many advantages as well.
“The biggest consideration was the possibility for more courses, especially outdoor courses,” Popinchalk said.
Because the weather is better in the fall, many more local trips will be able to take place. Also, backpacking trips and other trips that take place outside will have a better chance of staying dry and warm.
Another advantage was that groups could build lasting relationships throughout the year before the seniors graduate and the summer begins. Many teachers are ready for all the new exciting experiences that Ex Ed in the fall will bring.
“I am doing Polar to Solar this year because it will be the last year I can do it. Changing Ex Ed to the fall does not limit my possibilities it changes them,” AHS teacher, Travis Moore said.
