The Olympic torch in Italy is still warm, but for the world’s top halfpipe athletes, the biggest prizes of the year are just about to hit the Roaring Fork Valley. On February 27, the Snow League will return to Buttermilk Mountain for the second event of its first season. The event transforms Aspen into a post-Olympic competition where Olympic gold medalists straight from Milano Cortina will adjust to the biggest prize in professional snowboarding and freeskiing.
Established in June 2024, the Snow League was founded by Shaun White as the first year-round winter sports league dedicated to freeskiing and snowboarding. The league features a global, multi-event format in which athletes compete to accumulate points based on their results in each event. All points are counted at the end of the season to crown a champion. This is the first season of Snow League, and it’s the third event out of four. The first competition occurred in Aspen in March 2025 and focused on the Snowboard halfpipe. The second event occurred in China, at the Yunding Secret Garden, and featured snowboarding and freeski halfpipe. The third event is set to take place in Aspen, and features snowboard and freeski halfpipe, and the fourth event is planned to take place in Switzerland at the LAAX. This event will wind up the first season of the Snow League and will crown the champion who will take the $160,000 season champion prize, as well as a newly revealed trophy to help make a more traditional prize.
The athlete list that is set to take the stage at the Buttermilk Super Pipe has been named and features world-famous phenoms. Athletes such as Queralt Castellet, a 6-time Olympian and icon in Europe, Jiayu Liu, an athlete from China who won China’s first ever Snowboarding medal, and Maddie Mastro, the first woman ever to land a “double crippler” in competition On the men’s side, athletes such as Alessandro Barbieri, a 16-year-old prodigy who is ranked number 1 on the men’s pro team, Yuto Totsuka, a Japanese World Cup Leader known for having the most technical style in the world, and Chaeun Lee, who became the first South Korean in history to win a Snowboard World Championship.
Aspen has always played a role in the evolution, tying back to the roots of the resort, and Snow League opens a new chapter to this legacy. This event lets people witness the world’s greatest athletes from a different, fun perspective. By choosing Aspen as Snow League’s base, it honors the roots of skiing while creating a future for the sport.
