Aspen Yik Yak Getting Under Control

Yik Yak, the new anonymous social media, has become wildly popular in Aspen. After downloading Yik Yak, anyone can write an anonymous comment that is posted for all other “Yakkers” in that area code to see. If one were to travel to Basalt, or even the small distance to Snowmass, the Yaks in the areas would be different due to the change in location.

Many students feel that Aspen’s Yaks have gotten a little bit out of hand, however it seems that it is getting under control. In the first week of school, the following Yaks were aimed at Freshmen girls: “Jesus, I saw a freshman girl with a belly button ring wtf” or “Advice to freshman girls: Keep track of potential fathers.” The vast majority of Yaks about freshmen girls have been negative, except for the occasional one defending them, although those do seem rare. Although few Yakkers have been defending the freshman, people not using the app have been doing their best to stop the inappropriate comments.

Aspen High School sent an email to all parents warning about the bullying that has been going on with an app (Yik Yak), instructing parents to tell their children to delete it.

“When I checked the app the very next day, there were significantly fewer students accessing it, in a single day. So, I was very impressed and surprised by the reaction of our parent community,” AHS Principal Kim Martin said.

Martin thinks the app will be short lived, just like many of the other social media that have been forgotten.

“Today it’s Yik Yak, tomorrow it will be something else,” Martin said.

“I don’t know about the popularity of the app, but I think it is going to go down, or at least that’s what I would hope.” AHS counselor Josh Berro said. “I am  kind of in shock right now. I mean it’s disgusting.”

“The app is stupid and freshman girls are getting hated on,” AHS student Mackenzie Miller said.

Now that many people have deleted the app, or at least stopped leaving inappropriate comments, it seems that the tension between senior and freshman girls is dying down, at least as it pertains to Yik Yak. Furthermore,  the Yaks on Yik Yak have seemed to have changed subjects from freshman girls to random funny comments.
