Springing into Spring Sports

Senior Arthur Kelso rollerblades through the skate park.

Spring can be a bit of an awkward season. We can have a sixty degree day followed by a blizzard at fifteen degrees. Mud and slush overwhelm the streets one day and the next is all dry pavement. During this strange time of year it can be hard to know what to do. With all of the strange weather and varying temperatures, the following are a few spring activities that are proven people pleasers.

Go spring skiing; half dressed and twice the fun.

Skiing is one of the best sports in spring. Instead of having to bundle up and carry hand warmers, one can strip off the warm coat and gloves, and hit the slopes in a teeshirt and shorts. The feeling of speeding down the mountain with the sun on your back is one like no other.

“There’s nothing like skiing spring snow on a 60 degree bluebird day” says senior Chapin Newhard.
Head to the skate park.

With the snow beginning to melt, the skatepark becomes a prime location to hang out on a warm spring day. One can either jump in the park or bask in the sun and just watch the action. The skate park isn’t just for skateboarding; Senior Arthur Kelso likes to ride it on rollerblades.

“I have been thinking about the park drying up since winter started. I haven’t been able to ski much, so this is my substitution. I love this sport, ” Kelso said.

Go for a hike.

Hiking is not only one of the best ways to get in shape before summer, but also a sure fire way to enjoy some of the most amazing views in the Aspen area. With an endless amount of trails and mountains to climb, there is a great variation in difficulty for the different levels of hikers.

“ I love living in a place where I don’t need to go far to experience such amazing outdoor opportunities! Hiking in the spring is great. It’s the perfect time when everything is transitioning into summer, and it can be really beautiful,” said Sophomore Luke Ryan after hiking up to the platform on Smuggler Mountain.

Go for a bike ride.

“I love biking in the spring so much. It makes me happy to have the sun out and be able to enjoy it with this wonderful activity. You just feel so free while riding a bike,” said Sophomore Carson Friedland. Friedland then continued to explain how fantastic it is to be able to bike everywhere in our beautiful town. Whether biking for transportation, enjoyment, or exercise, people are sure to enjoy a ride in the lovely spring weather.

Take a swim.

“Under water is the best place to be on a warm day,” says Sophomore Calli Ferguson after taking a dip in the pool. Swimming is a great way to spend time with friends and family in a fun environment, and it’s also a great way to cool off on a hot spring day. It is also a great workout.

There is so much to do in this wonderful season. Head outside and enjoy the warm temperatures and plentiful activities.
