Goals of the Aspen High School Dance Team

The Aspen High School’s Dance Team went to the Colorado State Championships where they competed to qualify for National finals in Florida.

The team had been training intensely for the past few weeks before states as they prepared to execute a perfectly groomed performance at States. They felt encouraged by their efforts going in, and they felt more than ready to go show how far they’d come despite some setbacks.

“Since the football season ended we’ve had people quit, we’ve had people get injured, and people have become really sick. All these people were originally in the dance so we had to adjust to these sudden changes very quickly,” team captain Johanah Canas said.

As a team, they have accomplished a lot this season. They have managed to overcome obstacles and have seen some impressive feats.

Team dancer Grace Romero said.“We had a lot of success at our competition that we went to before state because we beat the 5A school that is East High. They have over 1,000 people per grade, so they have a lot more variety and more dancers to choose from. That was a really big feat and accomplishment.”

Caprice Seaman, team dancer said, “Another big accomplishment was that we went to a competition two weeks ago, and we got a bid for Nationals! That means that if we got top two at states, we would qualify for Nationals in Florida, which is something that’s super exciting.”

The team had high expectations for themselves.  “One of our main goals was to make it to finals.” Canas said. “We danced Saturday morning and found out if we made finals at around 10:00 AM. If we did make it, then we would dance again that night. We were hopeful we at least make it to finals.”

The Dance team has the longest season of the school sports because they do a fall season and a winter season cheering at the Football and Basketball games. They are also planning on making an appearance at several hockey games this season.
