On May 16th, the members of the Strong Women Strong World club are encouraging people to participate in the World Vision Global 6k for Water. Participates in the run will give a flexible donation fee that will go directly to building water wells in Zambia. The length of the race is the average distance women and children walk to get water in developing countries, which is six kilometers or 3.7 miles.
President of the club, AHS junior Stef Wojcik, believes that this fundraiser is especially beneficial during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The 6k helps us raise awareness about how COVID-19 is impacting people in less fortunate countries. We want to provide support so that these communities can respond to COVID-19. Hand washing has been proven to be the most effective way of minimizing the spread of COVID-19, however, the areas that Strong Women Strong World next-gen are trying to support do not have access to clean water,” Wojcik said.
The Strong Women Strong World club registered 60 participants from nine states and six countries to run with them as well. The club’s goal is not only to raise money for water wells in Zambia but also to support women in developing countries.
“I believe that everybody deserves similar opportunities no matter where they live. Women and girls have to be empowered to ensure that there will be balanced communities and providing clean water and hygienic support is a way of getting those people into schools and into the workforce,” Wojcik said.
