Students overflowing into the science wing one day, the next, a neat, orderly line with not nearly as many students. Clearly, there are some meals the student body favors more than others. In this article, I will dig into (pun intended) student and staff favorites from the AHS cafeteria.

3. Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup

A classic comfort pairing. The warm, cheesy bread dipped in the rich tomato sauce brings students back to simpler times. While it doesn’t appear on the menu as often as some of the other fan favorites, it’s an underrated choice. The bread looks as though it’s toasted in butter, and the soup contains notes of garlic, chili powder, and fresh basil.

“It’s just GOATed, and very filling. Reminds me of home. Also, it’s a good vegetarian option,” AHS Sophomore Suki Manuel said, elaborating on her love for the grilled cheese and tomato soup.

2. Nachos

A personal favorite of mine, the nachos are a simple but delicious meal that always brings in a crowd. While they can be served with beef or chicken, many students prefer the beef as they believe it’s more flavorful and adds an extra layer of deliciousness to the meal. The cheese sauce is what really completes the meal for many, and it has some surprising secret ingredients that add to its flavor. In addition to cheese and milk, the sauce also includes olive oil, celery, garlic, onions, and chicken stock, making it both flavorful and nutritious. Students love this meal for its delicious reliability, especially AHS senior Jaxon Hartley.

The nachos are “one of the only meals that has protein and tastes good consistently,” Hartley said when asked why he loves them.

1. Burrito Bowls

The overwhelming number one pick for both the students and staff at AHS is the burrito bowls. This is clear by the droves of kids who rush to the line every Tuesday when it’s available. Just the other day, it took me 15 minutes to get my meal because there were so many eager eaters! This meal is the perfect mix of comforting and bowl-d with its exotic and tasty flavors.

“The burrito bowls from my school are easily one of the best parts of lunch,” AHS Junior Jesse Shiflet said. “They start with a warm, hearty base of chicken and rice that’s both filling and flavorful. The chicken is usually tender and seasoned just right, while the rice adds that perfect balance of comfort and texture. Together, they make the kind of meal that keeps you energized through the rest of the day,” said Shiflet.

That’s a wrap (pun intended)! The next time you choose to dine at the AHS cafeteria, check out these delicious eats. If you’re craving these meals at home, check out the Skier Recipe Book, which has the recipes for all the cafeteria has to offer.
