Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is one of the largest and most famous music festivals in the world. Held each April in the desert of California, the festival features two weekends that showcase a wide range of artists across all genres, along with large-scale art installations and fashion statements.
Coachella’s second weekend has historically been viewed as an afterthought. After all, it is just a repeat of the prior weekend’s performances. However, this year’s second weekend was jam-packed with special guests, last-minute sets, and other surprises that gave weekend one attendees some serious FOMO.
One of the biggest differences between the two weekends came down to performance quality. Between weekends, artists had time to work on technical issues, timing mistakes, and other adjustments, making weekend two a more immersive experience. A polished set and performance is the foundation of any festival; it is a large reason why people are there in the first place.
Even more noticeably, weekend two absolutely dominated in terms of surprise guests. While weekend one had its fair share of cameos, weekend two took it to another level entirely. Major artists brought out bigger and more unexpected names, turning already popular sets into viral moments. Appearances from stars like Madonna, Billie Eilish, and SZA elevated the performances and created a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Sabrina Carpenter bringing out Madonna instantly became one of the most talked-about moments of the festival. Similarly, Justin Bieber's set expanded in weekend two with additional high-profile guests, surprising guests with the infamous Billie Eilish for ‘Lonely Girl’ and SZA for their song: Snooze. Even rising star Sombr, added to the list of icons brought on stage with Billy Idol.
Beyond the performances themselves, the overall atmosphere seems more appealing to the average person. There is a long-standing stereotype that weekend one attracts more influencers, while weekend two is for the girls. Whether true or not, a fan reports that: “Weekend two’s vibes are better because it seems to be when more of the locals and people who love music go to the festival to enjoy the shows.”
Ultimately, what was once considered the “second showing” of Coachella has now shown itself to be its main event. The combined smoother production, stronger guest appearances, and a more authentic crowd experience created something that felt even more magical than weekend one.
