The AHS girl’s tennis team shows of their medals on the tennis court after winning the Delta Invitational Tennis Tournament.

It is time that Aspen High School recognizes senior Haley Hopkinson, senior Sadie Alpern, and junior Kelsey Ward for their great success in qualifying for the State Championship and the entire  girls tennis team for placing 3rd overall in regionals.Alpern and Ward won the No. 2 doubles competition and Hopkinson won the No. 2 singles slot.

Haley played four impressive matches at regionals.

“There were sixteen girls playing at number two singles, and I played three matches to get to finals.  Then I won finals in three sets against a girl from steamboat,” Hopkinson said.

Junior Caroline DeRosa placed fourth in regionals.

DeRosa is Aspen’s number three singles varsity player and has been ending the spring season strongly having just won “most outstanding singles player” at the Delta Invitational on April 17-19.

Captain and No. 1 singles player, Caroline Godfrey is also very pleased with how the season has been going, and she personally has only lost two matches.

“I’m very happy with the season and the team so far.  Everyone has been playing really well,” Godfrey said.

The girl’s tennis season is coming to a close however, due to the fact that the qualifying teams will not be able to attend the state championship because of IB exams.

Regardless of the season ending, the girls on the team are reflecting on the past few months and already thinking about next year and their goals.

“Tennis was much more serious this year and we certainly did more running but the hard work paid off in the end and has landed some of us a seat in the State Championship,” said DeRosa.

It seems that the tennis team benefited from the new team members and coaches.

Now that they have concluded their season it is time they begin looking into the future of the tennis team.

“Next year I’m hoping to rebuild the team because we will be losing five seniors at the end of this season. Our team will be young, but we will still be fairly strong,” said Godfrey.
