Recap: Super Bowl 2015 Commercials

During a standard football game, commercials are a time for you to fill up your drink, recap the last play, go to the bathroom, stuff down chips, and flip some burgers. However, the highly anticipated commercials during the Super Bowl keep viewers in their seat.

During the first Super Bowl in 1967, a 30 minute commercial would only cost a company $42,000. This year, the cost for a commercial during the prevalent game costs a whopping $4.5 million for a 30 second commercial and $9 million for a minute commercial. That averages to $150,000 per second! These are record high numbers for airtime; however, the cost benefit is high when almost the whole Nation is watching. In addition, Super Bowl commercials have a reputation for being highly anticipated. The following five commercials stood out to my somewhat critical film mind.

Nationwide:

This utterly depressing commercial certainly put a damper on Super Bowl celebrations all around the Nation. The insurance company promoted their #makesafehappen campaign by showing a boy riding a bike, flying, experiencing his first kiss, and getting married, only to discover that he will experience none of this because of an accidental death. The commercial concluded with a melancholy version of the familiar Nationwide jingle. This commercial clearly made the statement that was intended, but its message was endorsed in a disheartening and morbid fashion.

Snickers:

As a TV fanatic, my heart skipped a beat when I saw the Brady Bunch residence followed by the appearance of parents Mike and Carol Brady. In this clever/creepy ad, Danny Trejo’s very recognizable face is used as Marcia Brandy’s hungry and angry persona. After being handed a Snickers bar, which ultimately satisfies your hunger, Trejo’s character turns back into the sweet and lovable Marcia Brandy. The end shot of the campaign’s logo had the distinguishable grid backdrop, which was used in the Brandy Bunch theme song. This funny commercial was a refreshing trip back to the 70’s.

GoDaddy:

After being told that their ads were too sexual and provocative for the public eye last year, the world’s leading domain registrar took a different approach to their 2015 commercial. However, reactions were still negative with backlash from animal activists. The cute, Labrador puppy that everyone fawned over in last year’s Budweiser commercial is back, but making a different debut than usual. This commercial is a mockery of the beer commercial and evidently makes you laugh at the end, after the dog is sold online using a website created by GoDaddy. Even I got a little laugh out of this commercial regardless of my unconditional love for the adorable animal. Animal enthusiasts, however, were outraged by the commercial, as they believed it disrespected animals. As a result, the commercial was retracted from their reserved air spot. The commercial can still be found online but was made private on YouTube.

T-Mobile

This commercial will either make you cringe, laugh, or question the ad. The selfie queen and socialite, Kim Kardashian stars in T-Mobile’s 35-second commercial as she promotes their “Data Stash” campaign. Kim discusses the misfortune of unused cell phone data that does not rollover to the following month. She makes her point by claiming that data deprived costumers can’t see her backhand, her outfits, her vacations, and her outfits once again. Her iconic large booty is out for the world to see and Kim doesn’t seem to mind. She appears to be making fun of herself, but watchers are getting the last laugh. The company is getting all the press they were hoping through this commercial. This was a great publicity stunt for the cell phone company, but I couldn’t help but feel uncomfortable by Kim’s obvious narcissism.

Always #LikeAGirl

As this video first made its debut months ago, I was surprised to see it on air as opposed to on my Facebook newsfeed. However, this empowering public service announcement wowed viewers with the reality and truth behind it. Both male and female adults were told to do different actions “like a girl” and their demonstrative actions were wimpy and unimpressive. Following this, young girls, who have yet to hit puberty, were asked the same questions. Their actions were ambitious and strong. This campaign promotes female strength in it and Always is the first feminine care brand to advertise in the Super Bowl.
