It’s clear from the first step into Over Easy, a restaurant focusing on breakfast and lunch, that it is no tourist destination. Every aspect of the eatery, from its artwork to the menu, describes a true local’s diner.

Unlike many restaurants, Over Easy did not have a fancy dress code for its guests or employees which gave it a more nonchalant feeling. This is perfect for anyone looking to get up and go, without much thought. It was clear that a tourist clad in fur would never be seen here, giving locals an escape from the busy on-season streets. Along with the relaxed style, the artwork and music also contributes to the laidback atmosphere.

Many pictures hanging on the wall feature nature photography, most of which include Aspen’s signature aspen leaf. Over Easy also features abstract art, which accompanies the alternative music selection as well, making every morning appear to be a lazy Sunday brunch-day. The food also matches the environment, as Over Easy specializes in juice and breakfast dishes.

With a juice menu featuring 19 juices and smoothies there’s something for everyone. I chose the watermelon juice, which isn’t available in stores and I wasn’t disappointed. It is clearly freshly pressed and not too sweet like a juice you would find in the supermarket. In addition to the delicious juice, the plates are large and left me full and able to take on the day. The loaded fries are delicious and big enough for two and the cheese, beans, jalapenos, sour cream, bacon, and tomatoes all meshed well together making the meal more memorable than just fries. The plate of eggs and hash browns were served as a traditional breakfast item, and they’re not a let down, as they’re better than the typical home cooked breakfasts I’ve experienced. Though many restaurants in Aspen charge around 20 dollars for a meal, all entrées at Over Easy are between nine and 18 dollars.

Between the many shops, restaurants, and streets in Aspen, Over Easy remains hidden from tourists. It is a true local’s gem that should be experienced by all Aspenites and AHS students looking for a relatively cheap and casual weekend getaway brunch.
