The Strange Days in January

Oh man, this is gonna be a crazy story, so let’s start crazy then. Did you know, that on January second, there is a national “Run it Up the Flagpole and See If Anyone Salutes” day? It’s a metaphor for running ideas by someone, but weird name. I’ll skip that one on this list of this year’s most memorable,  legitimate holidays. Enjoy!

Humiliation Day

Contrary to what it’s name may suggest, Humiliation Day is not the day to humiliate someone; it’s to feel remorse for a time when you did. It stems more from the word humility, and the idea of being humble, than humiliation of someone or a group of people. So, if you celebrated it this January 3rd, you should’ve thought about times you humiliated someone, and maybe apologize to that person, and think about never humiliating another person again.

Bean Day

Bean Day, as you can guess, is a celebration of beans. Nobody knows why it’s celebrated, but it’s always celebrated by some people on January 6th. There aren’t bean parades, but it can be celebrated right in your own home! Just heat up a can of beans, and have a nice meal! I never even knew it existed until I started researching strange, special days and came across this one in January, though. Shows why we have to check the calendar.

Make Your Dream Come True Day

Make Your Dream Come True Day is exactly what it suggests. Maybe you won’t become rich, but good things will happen! It’s encouragement is to go out there and do what you want to do, and if you want to get rich, maybe some good luck will stumble upon you, and a job opportunity will appear, or maybe you’ll be a caddy for Bill Gates and he’ll pay off your student loan (true story, he did this for one golf caddy on this day)! It’s celebrated January 13th, and nobody knows where it came from either, but over 25% of the U.S. celebrates it.

Dress Up Your Pet Day

This day is all about dressing up your pet! Lots of people do this just for fun, but most don’t know it isn’t an actual day. You can go out and buy an outfit from your closest pet supply store, and even though your pet (most likely) won’t like it, just imagine how funny it will look. Most people do it year long, so they normally pass January 14th without even knowing that they successfully celebrated the day. Be careful with cats though, or else you’ll end up with a few scratches.

Opposite Day

Opposite Day isn’t an old holiday. It wasn’t created back in the 1920’s, when President Calvin Coolidge didn’t say something that didn’t mean another. Of course, he did expect this to happen. Adults really do celebrate this day, while children celebrate it the least. It doesn’t take place on January 25th. So don’t remember to not do everything backwards, and don’t speak in strange ways, and definitely don’t have fun with your friends!

National Kazoo Day

It’s everyone’s favorite instrument, and a national holiday was created for it! Although it’s not validated as a national holiday by congress, people all over the U.S. celebrate it! So on January 28th, go out, buy a fine kazoo, and go to the streets, playing the kazoo for all to hear! The kazoo was invented in the 1840’s, and first presented in 1852, at the Georgia State Fair, and was known as the “Down South Submarine.” Many people are trying to petition to make the kazoo the national instrument as well! Children and adults enjoy the kazoo alike, and from it’s simplicity, anybody can play!
