The AHS golf team hopes to be a major for the state championship this year after winning the Vail mountain regional tournament. The six-person team has seen many courses over the past few years, but could never sweep the win going into later rounds.

“We’re looking to take home the win this year. We have probably one of the best teams in AHS history this season. A state championship banner is the only goal,” team captain Dominic Lanese said.

The loss of integral members Jack Pevny and Jack Hughes could affect the performance and skill level of the team, but that doesn’t worry the team’s all-conference golfer Dawson Holmes.

“It would have been really helpful to have them because of their consistency, but everyone can still shoot in the seventies,” Holmes said.

The team committed seven golfers to finish top ten in the Skiers Invitational, held at the Aspen Club on August 26, 2017.

“We almost took the W last week over in saddle rock. Hopefully, we can play like that again,” Lanese said.

Holmes carried the team last Tuesday, shooting a 68 on the full eighteen of Aspen’s course. Holmes also competes in a variety of nationwide tournaments, putting Aspen on the map. Lanese and Holmes’ experience with the game really serves as an advantage competing against other schools.

“Golf has been a passion of mine since I played it for the first time in 2011,” Lanese said.
