The AHS boys tennis team has had an exciting undefeated season this year. The team of eleven is looking forward to their upcoming Regional Tournament on Oct 3. Last year’s team won 2nd place at regionals, but this year they have greater aspirations.

“The singles have been doing super well at winning their matches, but occasionally we will lose a doubles match or two, so I think it’s mainly just building the chemistry of the doubles,” noted Varsity Captain Dillon Leasure.

In their recent match against Fossil Ridge, Aspen was victorious for the first time in over 20 years against them.

“Lately we have been playing a lot of the 5A schools such as Grand Junction and Fruita, and I think that will help the team since they are a bit better than the teams that we will be playing at Regionals, so we will be better prepared,” added Leasure.

“The team dynamic has been thriving with the leadership of Dillon and the rest of the seniors this year. They a create great team mentality,” teammate Georges Ghali said.

The team has won six out of their six in their matches so far this season. They are confident going into Regionals where they placed in the top three last year, and continued to place 4th at States.

The teammates have expressed their persistence as they train for their upcoming matches. They are determined to do better than last year.

The captain believes in the potential of the new freshmen on the team this year. Despite that they have less experience in the game, he thinks that they are positive attributes to team.

The team owes very much of their success to their coach, Steve Sand, a business teacher at AHS. Ghali spoke about how Sand teaches techniques to psych out the opponents according to the way that the players stand, and their positioning on the court. Sand specializes in coaching doubles tennis, in which all besides three of the players compete in.

The team’s hard work ethic is greatly paying off this year.
