On April 8, 2018, closing day at Aspen Highlands, one of the four ski resorts in the Aspen area, was one to remember for the community. Some of the events that take place are costume contests, skiing across ponds, and skiing with little clothing on. This is all followed by an after party at the Ale House, a local restaurant located at the base of Highlands. Stephen Herrera, one of the many bartenders at the Ale House, further explained the radicality of this year’s closing evening.

“The first thing that I can say about [closing night] is that we sold more drinks than we ever have,” Herrera said. “I think that a huge factor of why it was such a big season ender this year was because of the lack of snow, believe it or not. I think that it has been hard for local skiers to have a good time on the mountain this season until now.” Herrera said. “Unless we get less snow than we did this year, I don’t think that Aspen can logically expect a larger end of the season party than this one, but it was definitely fun while it lasted.”

According to the local ski bums, it was a celebration to be remembered for a long time, although they had different reasons for the colossal gathering compared to other years. It has been said that the millenials of the past few decades have been known to party and have a good time. Local ski bum, Sam Coffey, was born and raised in Aspen and has been skiing for as long he can remember. He adds upon the topic of this year’s youth generation.

“I personally think that this year was such a banger simply because of the fact that all of these 21st century babies know how to party. The festivity has been getting bigger every season up until now, which was probably twice as large as the next biggest year.” Coffey said. “ I truly hope that there is more growth to come, but that almost seems like too much to ask for at this point. All you can do in the end is hope.”
