Hot Take: Pumpkin Carving is Stupid

October 31. A day some look forward to, and some dread. On this day American citizens scramble to create the most “unique” Halloween costume. But in reality, the same ten outfits are on repeat. Once dressed in your costume, you proceed to trick-or-treat on people’s porches. On every porch, there is a pumpkin. Not just an orange festive pumpkin. But a pumpkin with uneven cuts and juice spewing out from all sides. One may call this fun, but I refer to it as the object that gives you instant OCD.
I hate to be the vibe killer, but this topic needs to be addressed. Why does one feel the need to create gaping holes into a pumpkin in an attempt to make it look like a witch? Once you create the gaping holes you must stick your hands into “guts” and pull them out individually. The guts are slimy and have the texture of a dirt worm.

I can not fathom how in other countries their decor consists of Roman buildings and famous artwork, but in the United States, we chose to value a cut-open pumpkin.

In order to persuade my point a little further, think back to your trick-or-treating days (maybe some of you are still in them). Imagine yourself running up to a front door and knocking, waiting for someone to come out with candy. During this waiting period, did you ever care to glance at the pumpkins down below? Did you ever think to yourself “Wow that pumpkin is a beautifully carved pumpkin” I know you’re thinking ‘No”. Please do not lie.

With my point being made, I think there needs to be an initiative for change around this tradition of Halloween. Why don’t we begin to let kids take more than one piece of candy? We could even just leave the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch. I truly believe that abolishing pumpkin carving would create a shift in the aura of Halloween.
