As senior Will Kahn sits down at his desk every week, he isn’t always planning on writing a paper for school or finishing up on some math homework. Kahn spends his time recording for the radio show that he hosts, the Will Kahn Show.

Just under two years ago, Kahn and the director of Aspen Public Radio, Carolyne Heldman, met up and discussed the possibility of starting the show. The plan was to play music for a younger demographic throughout the valley. Kahn took this idea and created the Will Kahn Show. Kahn drew up a model for the show and, he and Heldman both knew this project was ready to start. After Kahn went out and purchased an interface and a studio mic, he had all the tools necessary for recording. Not only is Kahn just in high school and has his own radio show, but Kahn’s broadcast differs from other shows featured on Aspen Public Radio in another way.

“I’m the only indie music talk show on Aspen Public Radio and perhaps all of FM radio in Aspen or the Valley,” said Kahn.

Kahn’s unique indie style is a major factor that makes his radio show so special. Instead of playing music from a specific genre or era, he prefers to play a wide variety of music from hip hop to melancholic folk music. He enjoys the idea of throwing in a number of different genres and artists to give the listener a distinctive and memorable experience.

“I like mixing up,” Kahn said. “Everything is awesome in doses. Sometimes Bob Dylan and Wavves will appear in the same show. I think everybody likes variation.”

One of Kahn’s listeners thoroughly enjoys the concept of listening to a wide range of music.

“I really enjoy how much variety there is. It keeps me engaged in the music and gives me a nice experience,” said music loving freshman Drew Miller, “By listening to the Will Kahn Show, I’ve been introduced to a huge number of new genres and styles.”

Although recording the show seems like a large amount of fun, Kahn has to devote a solid portion of his week to record the show every week. It takes Kahn about an hour and half to  record the show. He also gives himself two or three days to prepare the broadcast. Kahn did add, however, that working on the show is a great way to think of something other than academics and he has a good time working with what he loves, music.

“It’s fun and it takes my mind off of academics. Although it is a cerebral workout,” said Kahn.

By focusing on time management Kahn says that the show is all in all a great way to share some of his favorite music and think about something other than school.

“It’s all about allocating enough time to picking out a good playlist and executing a show,” said Kahn.

In the future, Kahn is planning on continuing with his work in music. With college right around the corner, Kahn is thinking about being a DJ in college, and he hopes that his younger brothers Harry and Sam will carry on with the show.

“It’s an awesome outlet and, it would be cool if we could keep it going next year,” said Kahn.

If you would like to tune in on the Will Kahn Show, you can pick it up on Aspen Public Radio on 91.5 on Friday nights at 10:00 pm.
